According to [Hebrews 11] faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. In other words faith is being certain of what we do not see. It is an absolute belief in God and his word, knowing he is working behind the scenes in every area of our lives, even when there is no tangible prove or evidence to support that fact. On the other hand fear is the complete opposite of faith, it works in the negative direction and therefore it produces negative results. Fear is unbelief or weak belief in God and his word.
Take the story of nick for example;
A strong, young bull-of-a-man, who worked on a train crew. It seemed Nick had everything; a strong healthy body, ambition, a wife, two children, and many friends. However, Nick had one fault. He was very worrisome. He worried about everything and usually feared the worst was going to happen in every situation.
One midsummer day, the train crew were informed that they could quit an hour early in honour of the fore man’s birthday. Accidentally, Nick was locked in a refrigerator box car, and all the other workmen had left the site, there was no one to help Nick out of the box car, and as usual, Nike panicked! He immediately thought the worst was going to happen.He banged and shouted until his fists were all bloody and his voice was hoarse. No one heard him. “If I can’t get out, I’ll freeze to death in here,” he thought. Wanting to let his wife and family know exactly what had happened to him, Nick found a knife and began to carve words on the wooden floor. He wrote; “It’s so cold, my body is getting numb. If I could just go to sleep. These may be my last words.” and he sure was right.
The next morning the crew slid open the heavy doors of the box car and found Nick dead. An autopsy revealed that every physical sign of his body indicated he had frozen to death. And yet, the most striking part of the story. The refrigeration unit of the car was inoperative, and the temperature of the boxcar had not dropped below fifty-five degrees. Nick had frozen not due to the temperature of the refrigerator box car, but because of his “fear”. Nick put his fear rather than faith to work and ended up frozen in a box car that wasn’t even in operation. You’re probably thinking; “is fear that powerful?” Another story I’d like to share with you tells more about fear.
A middle age lady owned a flowering business, she was a specialist in flowering, knew everything about flowers; how to plant them, grow them, preserve them, everything. She had been into it for years and was excellent at it. One day she bought a rear breed, a beautiful flower she would grow and nurture in her garden, like the other flowers. But as she planted this particular flower fear rose up in her, she feared the plant would not make it and all her money invested in it would be lost. Months passed by and the plant grew healthy, strong and beautiful, well at least everyone else who saw it thought it was healthy, strong and beautiful. But not her, she constantly told her husband something in her said the plant would not make it. And she sure was right, boy! was her fear working.
Soon enough, the healthy growing plant began withering, the leaves began to turn yellow, dry up and so did the stem. A few weeks later God spoke to her loud and clear, he said; ” YOU KILLED THAT PLANT! WITH YOUR NEGATIVE THOUGHTS”. That plant had not died due to bad maintenance, bad weather conditions or anything else, that perfectly healthy, strong, and beautiful plant had died due to her negative thoughts, which were the products of “fear”. It’s just like in the book of job, he said; Job 3:25 KJV
“For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me”.
As we allow unbelief to take over our thoughts, fear takes hold of our emotions. The florist let fear take over her emotions and well, the flower and her money invested in it were all gone. Yes, fear can be that powerful. If and only if we allow it to rule over our lives. It’s like in a Democrat system of government, the people have all the power initially but they vote in a person to handle all that power and put it to use in a good way or a bad way. Giving in to fear is like voting a criminal into power, obviously there’ll be hardship, the people would be weak and helpless, they’ll be oppressed and exploited of all their resources. In the same way, fear op presses us, it steals our potentials, it makes us weak and helpless, it even makes us doubt our abilities and talents, it completely blinds us from seeing and believing in what actually is the truth.
We need to see that fear has nothing good to offer us, it make us worry, feel sad all the time, doubt ourselves, it even gets us all wrinkled up and what’s worst? We still loose in the end. Whereas faith gives us stress less confidence because we know it is not by our power or might but by the spirit of God that we are able to do all things, it gives us joy that flows from the inside to the outside. If only we can channel all that effort we put in to worrying, regretting and fearing the worst into our building and developing our faith, then every challenge would be a stepping stone into a greatness. Faith is not something we produce but a gift that’s given to us already by God through salvation.
The word of God (The bible) is full of promises for us to take hold of and claim for ourselves. But these promises can only be accessed through “faith”. A typical example of faith in the Bible was David (1 Samuel 17:23) David was so full of faith that made him bold and fearless, He could challenge a giant (Goliath). Even when surrounding him were trained solders, army generals and the king full of fear. He didn’t give into their negative analysis which of course was orchestrated by their fear. He knew it wasn’t by his strength, he believed God was working behind the scene and the result of his faith? Was victory. Another example of faith, is found in the story of an old lady who visited the doctor many years back for a check up. According to him (the Doctor) she was sick with a certain disease. The old lady looked quite confusingly at the doctor and she said to him; “I don’t know the meaning of what you just said to me and I don’t want to know either. All I do know is that I do not have that disease, I cannot have it, in fact, “I’M TOO OLD TO HAVE IT”. I tell you, she walked out of that hospital never went back, never showed symptoms of that disease, she lived in health all through her remaining years. I for one think that is a great testimony.
We should never let people speak negativity into our lives, we should never accept anything said about us that is contrary to the word of God. Whenever something is said to or about us in the negative direction all we need to do is pull out our faith and speak the word of God that opposes that wrong declaration. The book of Matthew 18:19 KJV says;
Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. I believe this also works in the negative. A lot of healthy people have been to the hospital for a normal check up only to be told by the doctors that the had one disease or the other. Looking at them before the check up, the were perfectly fine but after hearing the doctors report and not having their faith activated, they give into fear and of course without hesitation fear steps in, takes hold of their emotions and they end up on a sick bed. Some of them have died and some are still fighting for their lives in fear. A lot of old people are so scared, they feel; “I’m old now I’m prone to so many sicknesses, I would start getting weak, I might even need a walking aid soon”. Abraham climbed up the mountain in his hundreds, he had such great strength in his old age. The old lady in the story I shared with you earlier, in her case she was “TOO OLD TO BE SICK”. Imagine if she had accepted the doctor’s report, if she thought like most old people would think, she probably would have lived the rest of her life on a sick bed. But she activated her faith, she draw it out and blocked every negativity, every atom of fear and the result of her faith was a good health throughout her days on earth.
I think faith is like a shield drawn from the word of God, we just block ourselves with it and you push away fear, every evil thought, every evil word that has been spoken over our Lives.
